Purpose
• to give public performances of concert band music to encourage interest
in music and cultural activities in the local area
• to provide an outlet for musical performance for local residents
• to provide an opportunity for developing the talents of participating
members
• to provide an educational opportunity for appreciation of concert band
music by the general public
• to support the performing arts generally by performance in, promotion
of, and participation in community events
Rehearsals
The Band rehearses throughout the year, each Thursday evening from 7:30 to 9:30
p.m., usually in the band room of the Pleasanton Middle School on Case Avenue
(off Bernal Avenue) in Pleasanton. Interested persons are invited to attend
a rehearsal prior to joining the Band.
Repertoire
The Band has well over 100 pieces in its repertoire each year, selected for
each performance from its library of over 1,200 pieces. They include Big Band
medleys, Broadway musicals, Dixieland, jazz, ragtime, well-known classics, popular
music, patriotic music, and, of course, marches.
Instrumentation
The Band has the typical instrumentation of a concert band: flutes and piccolos,
oboes and an English horn; clarinets (E-flat, B-flat, bass, and contrabass);
bassoons, saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone), trumpets and cornets,
horns, euphoniums, trombones, tubas, and percussion.
Concerts
The Band sponsors three concerts each year:
• Spring Concert
• Children's Concert
• Holiday Concert
Admission is free to all concerts, often underwritten by a grant.
The Band is invited to perform for several events each year, including:
• Spring Concert, the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Livermore
• Annual Concert, the Masonic Home, Union City
• Art Under the Oaks, Alden Lane Nursery, Livermore
• Las Positas College Commencement, Livermore
• Farmers' Market, Pleasanton
• Fourth of Judy Ceremony, Pleasanton
• Airport Appreciation Day, Livermore Airport
• Veterans Day Ceremonies, Livermore and Pleasanton
The Band also plays for special community activities such as Art Under the Oaks,
the Livermore Airport Open House, the Ravenswood Historic Site Old-Fashioned
Ice Cream Social in Livermore, and has performed for the dedications of the
Pleasanton Sports Park, Tennis Park, and Aquatic Center. It also performs for
several commercial functions such as the Pleasanton Pasta Festival, the Pleasanton
Main Street Party, the ground-breaking of the Providian Bank, the opening of
the Valley Care Medical Center, and Santa's Arrival at Stoneridge Mall. The
Band has participated in the annual Community Band Festival in Sacramento.
Funding
The Band was incorporated in 1986 as a non-profit publicly supported charity
under the California Non-Profit Trust, IRS Section 501(c)3. Funding is primarily
from individual and business contributions plus the two annual fund-raising
concerts and donations for some performances. The Band has also received grants
from the Tri-Valley Community Fund and the Alameda County ARTSFUND.
Affiliations
The Band is a member of the Association of Concert Bands, the Sacramento Valley
Symphonic Band Association, and the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce.
It is also part of the Pleasanton Adult Education Program.
