HISTORY
An "Art Association" was founded in May of 1957 with Dr. James Paul Wesley as President, Dr. E.O. Muhs as Vice-President, and Mrs. Lee Smith, as Secretary-Treasurer. The initial membership included 14 artists and people interested in art. The first action was to find a permanent home for the organization and a permanent place for displaying members' art. An immediate controversy erupted over some "public art", with the result that Dr. Wesley resigned and Dr. Muhs became President. The first art festival was held on 23 October 1957, entitled "Art of Nations," commemorating United Nations week. Annual fall art and garden fairs were held, which eventually became the "Fall Festival of the Arts" sponsored by the Livermore Cultural Arts Council. Since its beginning, the Livermore Art Association has encouraged the development of different art crafts such as weaving, pottery, sculpting, stitchery, and others.
The aim of the Livermore Art Association is to promote education and development of those who are interested in the arts. It encourages student membership from junior high through college.
